First Pedri - Now website

Last week and Monday and Tuesday I worked at Pedri for the NIBC. Learned a lot!
Right now, I'm working on the design of my father's website.

And the bunnies are getting big, they have fur all over and their eyes opened up yesterday.
One is definitely smaller then the other two, I hope it won't die.

Foster Home Bunny

Friday night, Lany, the foster home bunny, had three baby bunnies. They are all doing fine and they are extremely cute. Well, not when they were just born, they looked like strange little worms but they are getting fur. Don't worry about touching the babies. I rub my hands against Lany and I rub my hands in her droppings for the smell (I know gross) but I had to check if they looked well fed and they do, so I can leave them alone.

She was found in a 'hertenkamp' in Hilversum and I offered to take care of her because I'm a foster parent for the shelter and if 4 weeks passed without any babies she could go back to the shelter for adoption. So, in the final week she decided to give birth to 3 little worms and now she stays another 8 weeks before she has to go back. In 2 weeks their eyes will open and in about 3 weeks they will start to explore the room. Can't wait to die of cutieness.

In the meantime I'm working on the UltraKort-project.

According to mijnwoordenboek.nl the word herexamen is called resit. Anyway, tomorrow I will have my so called resit. I'm setting up everything right now and we (Tiddo and me) have a bit of audio-difficulties and the laptop does not like 1 gb films to play so we're making the films smaller too.

Well, I'm frustrated and a bit pissed. I can't seem to figure out how to connect a relay. Well I did made a connection but it didn't work. And after spending so many hours and searching on how the stupid relay works (well I know now). I couldn't make the connection work. I did learn how to read this:

At least I learned something. I find it very annoying that I couldn't make this connection work. I will keep trying because I obviously did something wrong. Then I will make my own tutorial with HQ pictures explaining everything and showing which wire goes where and why it goes there. There is no tutorial explaing what everything exactly is. You have to find bits and pieces everywhere around the internet to find out what everything means and for the ubernoob, like me, this is very frustrating. And some tutorials are allright but then the quality sucks or the basic stuff is missing or the relay is already wired. Leaving the noob out in the cold not knowing which wire went were. Pissed me off! Because you don't wan't to fry yourself or burn your house down including everybody elses house on the block. I'm going to make a tutorial where people who have never seen a datasheet will understand how to connect a relay to an Arduino and attach a light to it.

Datasheets are too abstract. I need full-colour-realistic pictures.

Yesterday my father received his new kidney. I'm very happy!! He was joking around, telling nurses what to do and very awake.
My sister, who gave her kidney to my father wasn't feeling very happy. She was in pain, drugged like a testlab monkey and unsatisfied with her nurse. But happy to see us.
My mother and my father's wife were talking together, laughing a bit and said goodbye in a normal, friendly manner, our family looked so normal and healthy all of the sudden.

And I decided to do my graduation at the end of September so I will have more time to figure out the technical part. This means I won't be at the schools exhibition.

Well, didnt't graduated yet. The 8 of September will be my second try to graduate.
25th of August I felt stupid, very ashamed towards the other people who had installations and deeply disappointed in myself. Picked myself up again that night by eating sticky fries, drinking champagne and wine and watched an incredibly bad b-horror movie with Tiddo, Marlyn & Jean-Paul..
We watched.....SHARKMAN!!!!

I fell asleep during the last 10 minutes.

A visual image is a term for the image a curved mirror reflects, where basically the reflection does not match the image as we see it in real life. 'Visual Image' is an installation that provides it's viewer/user with a similar distorted view on its subject: the viewers/users themselves. Using several principles of animation as well as both forgotten and tried-and-true attractions: This installation lays bare some animation fundamentals that film won’t show you.

In AE it was 12fps for 12 images and 6 rounds per sec.
But I rendered it at 25 because when I render it at 12 fps it acts like a bitch...
You can see the horse running and flickering between a man and a woman. The effect I want to create with the viewer.

For the man-layer I removed 6 of the 12 men and added another layer. I drew long hair on the men and made this layer the woman-layer and changed the color of the clothes.
Check out the amazing results!!!

Well, the result isn't so amazing online but you can see the flickering a bit.
That's it for today I'm going to retrieve something to take back what was taken from me.

The Phenakistoscope was invented by both Dr. Joseph Plateau and Simon von Stampfer in 1831. It is a circular, slotted disc with a sequence of images between the slots on one side. The viewer would fasten the disc to a handle, hold it up to a mirror at eye level, spin the disc, and look through the slots to see the reflected images move. The slots function like a shutter in a motion picture projector. Without the interruption from a “shutter” the images would look blurred. The Phenakistoscope could only be viewed by one person at a time.

The phenakistoscope illustrated here is a version that did not require the use of a mirror because the slots are on a separate disc from the images.

A friend of Tiddo is about to marry and we all had to design a piece of the collective 'painting' we we're going to give to the newly weds. I was trying to help Tiddo with some ideas, it had to be blue.

I don't have my wacom with me that is why the animation is crappy but this is just an idea.
If I create 20 panels and use a strobe with 20 flashes per second (fps).
Ten of the twenty panels have a mirror effect so you can see yourself. But the other 10 panels have an animation where I can try to manipulate the face of the viewer and manipulate the horse and the legs and so on.

It would be even more cool if I use mirror-foil where you can see through and see the person watching you. This effect only works when the inside is darker than outside. But when the strobe flashes the inside is brighter than the outside so the person standing on the outside can see the person on the inside. But the person on the outside becomes a part of the animation for the person on the inside.
This way you have multiple layers of animation. Theoretical it works inside my head.

Third year assignment.

We made an animation for Oxfam Novib about fair trade. Using chocolate as the main subject. The idea was to make an ironic film, but if I see it again after 2, 3 months I must agree with the fact that it's is not really ironic but more cheesy and I can imagine that someone who does not know the concept cannot sense the irony and someone will sense the cheesyness but there is a big possibility that the cheesyness in the film is taken too seriously. We know (the creators) it is there and it is supposed to be there but I think it is not sensible that you know or feel that the cheesyness should not be taken too seriously. The thing that we wanted to communicate is there but not good enough. But that was the hard part, how do we communicate and do we really communicate what we want to communicate. Good learning point for next time. I think the design looks great and we learned, well I did, a lot.

I animated the close-up feeding scene where the two characters fly out of the screen and back in and I made some textures for the backgrounds.
